Measuring the world of atoms in an industrial style
Cost-effective coating analysis and micro hardness measuring instruments enables economic quality testing in industrial nanotechnology.
Under the term nanotechnology, specialists develop and realize coatings or objects with thicknesses or dimensions of only a few manometers. Due to their special, physical properties, the coatings or objects that are only a few atomic layers thin have particular advantages.

Nanofactory Instruments develops and produces in-situ tools for electrical and mechanical probing inside the transmission electron microscope (TEM), without compromising its analytical capabilities. This combination of techniques enables simultaneous and correlated contact probing and manipulation of the sample while observing the sample with all the usual TEM techniques. This combined approach offers outstanding nanotechnology tools for manipulation, measurement and imaging on the atomic scale. The technique offers new opportunities for research and development in areas such as materials science, information technology and nanoscience.
The company’s solutions are based on miniaturized and patented scanning probe microscopes (SPM) that are small enough to fit inside the specimen holder of the TEM and it is the combination of two existing technologies that creates new opportunities for microscopy users. It gives the TEM user a set of manipulation and measurement tools and enables the SPM user to view and obtain information from the probe and sample at the nanoscale. The instruments make it easy to position and align a probe to conducting, semiconducting or non-conducting nanostructures with sub-nm precision, as well as characterizing, probing and imaging the object simultaneously. They enable electrical and mechanical probing of nanostructures inside the TEM and can be optimized for the study of dynamic processes.
The system consists of three main parts: a TEM specimen holder with an integrated SPM, control/measurement electronics and control/measurement software. The DOMINO project ("Development and Obtaining of Innovative Materials based on Focused Nanotechnology") is a project developed by a consortium of 16 Spanish innovative companies, from different industrial sectors, with the aim of developing new and improved multifunctional products using nanomaterials. The industrial partners that have developed the DOMINO project are Tolsa, Abengoa Solar New Technologies, Acciona Infraestructuras, Grupo Antolín, Caiba, Cray Valley Ibérica, Francisco Albero S.A (FAE), Grupo General Cable Sistemas, Industrias Murtra, Keraben, Líneas y Cables, Linpac Plastics Pravia, Moldeo y Diseño, Plastic Omnium Equipamientos Exteriores, Grupo Repol and Sistemas y Procesos Avanzados.
The ultimate objective of the project has been the development of new nanostructured materials to obtain new products with improved properties and performance for different industrial markets: automotive, packaging, textiles, electricity and electronics, aeronautics, wind power, environment, ceramics, glass, construction and coatings.
The new nanomaterials developed and studied in this project have been carbon nanofibers produced by Grupo Antolin and nanomaterials based on sepiolite, a special needle-like clay produced by Tolsa. Nanocomposite materials with polymer, ceramic, glass and cement matrices have been obtained using these nanomateriales with improved characteristics such as mechanical properties, thermal resistance, fire retardancy, electrical conductivity, photocatalytic and self-cleaning activity, new aesthetic effects, biocide properties and wear resistance.

Work to establish nanotechnology infrastructure and training for nanotechnology specialists, formerly conducted by the Russian Corporation of Nanotechnologies, has been entrusted to the Fund for Infrastructure and Educational Programs, a non-commercial fund also established through reorganization of the Russian Corporation of Nanotechnologies.
nano tech International Nanotechnology Exhibition and Conference, is the world’s largest and most important nanotech fair. Held every year in Tokyo since ten years, the event attracts more than 600 exhibitors from around 20 countries and regions. Nearly 50,000 visitors come to discover the latest nano materials, nano fabrication technology and evaluation & measurement.
